The Conference is LSV’s key annual event to prepare volunteers for the lifesaving season ahead. Volunteers will be provided with topical and essential information, encompassing Lifesaving Operations, Volunteer Training, Aquatic Sports and Membership & Leadership Development. The Conference provides the opportunity for LSV to demonstrate new resources that are available to clubs, as well as an opportunity for members to network with other club members from around the state.
2017 Lifesaving Conference Details
Registrations for the 2017 Lifesaving Conference are now open. This year’s Conference has the theme of ‘Volunteerism – it’s you, it’s me, it’s us’. The theme will reach across all aspects of the Conference to enhance healthy practices for clubs and members. The Conference will provide key volunteers with the latest resources and information in preparation for the 2017/18 season, encompassing Aquatic Sports, Training and Assessment, Membership and Leadership Development, LSV Education and Lifesaving Operations. The conference also provides an opportunity for LSV to provide demonstrations of new resources that are available to clubs and for members to network with other club members from around the state.
The 2017 Regional Workshops will then follow the conference and will held in the Western, Eastern and Central areas of the state.
When: Saturday, 19 August 2017
Time: The Conference will commence at 9:45am Sharp. Registration opens at 8:30am (with an optional breakfast until 9:30am)
Where: Life Saving Victoria State Centre, 200 The Boulevard, Port Melbourne
How much does it cost: The cost to attend this year’s conference is $15.00 (including GST) per attendee, please note:
- A discounted rate of $50.00 (including GST) is available for a group of 4 tickets
- This fee includes breakfast, morning tea, lunch as well afternoon tea and end of day nibbles
- Resources and conference material’s will be available
Who should attend: We encourage those members who hold leadership roles within each club or service (President, Secretary, Club Captain, Patrol Captain, Chief Instructor, Nipper Manager/Coordinator, Trainers, Assessors, Coaches etc.) as well as all club committee/executive members to attend. All members are welcome to attend the Conference as there are opportunities to network and review innovations
leading into the upcoming season.

Volunteering with significance – John will focus on our conference theme of volunteerism, in particular creating meaningful experiences:

Topical Discussion 1 – Sharks
LSV, along with subject matter experts from the CSIRO, will provide a topical discussion on the sharks Victoria encountered last summer, as well as:
• Facts about the type of sharks we see in Victorian waters
• Myth busting
• Insight and expertise around the sharks encountered specifically last summer and reasons they came
• LSV approach and measures put in place to deal with the increased sightings
• What to do when on patrol
Topical Discussion 2 – Safer Clubs – Building a transparent culture around child safety
As a sport that has children at the centre of its activities, Surf Life Saving needs to continually strengthen child safe strategies to protect young members from harm.
Presented by Morgan Landers, using contemporary risk management strategies and recent anecdotal evidence identified in Australian junior programs, this seminar will outline the significant benefits of a transparent child safe culture. It will include examples of transparent governance, tips for promotion of your club as a culture of child rights and allows for questions and discussions throughout.

Hear from a range of youth and senior leaders as they provide you with a personal insight into their leadership journey and how this has been enriched through their participation in LSV’s development and leadership offerings.
Volunteer Training
Session 1 – Training & Assessment IT Innovations
This session will discuss what innovative initiatives LSV are implementing within Volunteer Training and Assessment during the 2017/18 season. These innovations will assist in streamlining evidence capture points and ultimately the submission process for award allocation.
Sporting Schools Program
The LSV Education Team will provide an overview of the Sporting Schools Program (SSP) and the Surf Life Saving program endorsement process. This workshop will provide development support for any clubs wanting to get involved, who are currently running their own beach program or explore the possibility for clubs to deliver the LSV Education Team’s endorsed SPP; the Open Water Learning Experience.

Digital Radio Upgrade – An Update
This session will provide a progress update on the digital radio upgrade for LSV, and will cover:

Volunteer Training
Session 2 – Training & Assessment Season 2017/18
This session will provide attendees with an update on some important Training and Assessment processes and procedures, to assist you and your club in the coming season.
Aquatic Sport
Coaching and your leadership potential with special guest presenter Jimmy Walker (ski paddler and Olympian). Jimmy has been successful as an athlete and a coach. We will discuss with Jimmy all aspects in regard to ski paddling in lifesaving and why he believes that the leadership potential for our young people in surf lifesaving is enhanced through ski paddling.
2017 Regional Workshops
Life Saving Victoria (LSV) would like to advise that registrations for the 2017 Regional Workshops are now open. The 2017 Regional Workshops will be conducted in the Western, Eastern and Central areas of the state throughout September and October and will be free of charge to club members. Morning tea and lunch will be provided.
The objective of the Regional Workshop is for the sessions to build on the learnings and outcomes of the Lifesaving Conference to benefit all members. The Regional Workshops will include region specific information, important updates and provides clubs an opportunity to ask questions on a smaller scale and directly relating to their region. The workshop sessions will be focused on practical skills and resources members can use during the lifesaving season ahead. In addition to focusing on the skills required in each area, they are also more interactive and personal for the members so that more in-depth discussions can occur. For more information on each session, please see the programs on the following pages.

The Corporate Governance Workshop will cover the topics:
• Meeting facilitation and introduction into club governance
• SLS rule structure
• Meeting procedures and chairing meetings
• Financial management and risk management for boards

Club Insurance
Make sure your Club is across Insurance requirements and processes in Surf Life Saving. Hear from Brent Jaenke from Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) Australia and have your questions answered on Insurance. – Overview of general and specific insurances, including insurance for club assets – The dangers of under-insurance, and how JLT can assist in reducing this risk – Session will specifically be tailored for clubs to ask relevant questions and will provide clarity on what they are insured for – LSV will have further information available for club’s in regards to Volunteer Insurance and WorkCover process.

Grant Writing Workshop (Central only)
The Grant Writing Workshop is aimed at volunteers new to a grant writing position or those wishing to confirm their current practice. The Workshop is specific to life saving clubs and covers how to research suitable grant opportunities, completing a grant application and administrative procedures. You will learn more about the Surf Life Saving Foundation and the Grant Seeking Unit and how it can assist your club.

Get prepared for the 2017/18 lifesaving season with the latest information on patrol season requirements and defaults and a chance to ask questions in an open forum with your Lifesaving Services Officer and the LSV Director of Lifesaving services.

MLD Junior Coordinators Session
This session will provide an introduction to the Junior Coordinator role. It will provide you with the knowledge and resources to be able to successfully plan and implement a Nippers program. The topics will include administration requirements, available resources, Junior Preliminary and Surf Education Awards, Age Manager awards and water safety requirements.

Radio Network Update and LSVComms
Following on from the Radio Network Update at the Lifesaving Conference this session will provide a progress update on the digital radio network upgrade for LSV. This session will cover

Member to Member Complaints Handling
LSV will provide a workshop opportunity for clubs to discuss best practise process, workshop common issues and concerns and get support in regards to member to member complaints, including:

SLSA IT Systems Training
These sessions will be beneficial for anyone who will be utilising SLSA’s IT Systems for the 2016/17 season, in particular Surfguard Registrars, Membership Officers, Presidents, Secretaries, Junior Coordinators, Chief Instructors and Club Captains. It will be run by SLSA IT.

Hear all the latest updates related to Volunteer Training for the coming 2017/18 season. A number of changes have occurred within resources, IT programs and procedures related to both new and skills maintenance training/assessment requirements.
Audience: Chief Instructors, Training & Assessment Officers and Club Trainers/Assessors.
Volunteer Training Awards
Western & Eastern Regional Workshop:
• *1:00pm – 2:30pm Includes important Volunteer Training Updates and the chance for members to Upgrade their ARC to ART (AID) qualification, this is required for members who currently hold an Advanced Resuscitation Award but not an ART (AID) Award including HLTAID007. Pre requisite work is required for this Upgrade.
*This session includes a Train the Assessor session for ARTC, allowing Cert IV and Assessors Skills set holders to become an ARTC Assessor.
• 2:30pm – 4:30pm A Resuscitation award including HLTAID001 course will be conducted for all members who require this qualification.
Central:
• 9:00am – 10:00am Upgrade their ARC to ART (AID) qualification, this is required for members who currently hold an Advanced Resuscitation Award but not an ART (AID) Award including HLTAID007. Pre requisite work is required for Upgrade.
• 10:00am – 3:30pm First Aid Flexible Delivery course conducted. This course will include the units of competence HLTAID003,002,001 and includes a Train the Assessor session for First Aid, which allows Certificate IV and Assessors Skills Set holders to become a First Aid Assessor. Pre requisite work is required for this course.
