Club members have the opportunity to achieve a number of beach patrolling qualifications through its club system. These courses vary from Bronze Camps through to First Aid training mainly during the Summer months, a number of awards include Nationally Recognised Units of Competence.
Bronze Medallion – Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
SLSA Bronze Medallion Award:
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.
Pre-requisites
Candidates must meet ALL of the following conditions:
- Be a Financial Member of a Victorian Lifesaving Club
- Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Ability to complete a 400 metre swim in nine (9) minutes or less, unaided (goggles/mask permitted), in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course.
Course Outcomes
Those who successfully complete the nationally recognised qualification Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) assessment may also be eligible to receive the SLSA Bronze Medallion.
The following units of competency are issued with this qualification, PUA21012 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue):
- PUASAR012C Apply Surf Awareness and Self-Rescue Skills
- PUACOM001C Communicate in the workplace
- HLTFA211A Provide basic emergency life support
- PUASAR013A Participate in an aquatic rescue operation
- PUATEA001B Work in a team
- PUATEA004D Work effectively in a public safety organisation
- PUAOHS001C Follow defined occupational health and safety policies an procedures
- PUAOPE013A Operate communications systems and equipment
Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)
Surf Rescue Certificate – SRC
Provides participants with basic patrolling and surf awareness knowledge, in order to be able to participate in basic lifesaving operations.
Pre-requisites
- Be a Financial Member of a Victorian Lifesaving Club
- Be at least 13 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Ability to complete a 200 metre swim in five (5) minutes or less, unaided (goggles/mask permitted), in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water course.
Course Outcomes
Participants will be able to participate in patrols under the guidance of more experienced patrolling members. They can continue to develop their skills by completing their Bronze Medallion.
Advanced Resuscitation Techniques [AID]
Advanced Resuscitation Techniques [AID] – ARTC
The ARTC course will develop skills in the use of oxygen, airway management devices, and automated external defibrillators during resuscitation.
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
Course outcomes
Successful candidates will receive the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Operator Certificate
All Terrain Vehicle Operator Certificate
Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to safely and effectively operate an ATV for lifesaving purposes.
Prerequisites
To commence training for the ATV Operator Certificate you must meet the following course prerequisites.
- Be a Financial Member of Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 18 years of age on the date of assessment
- Hold a SLSA award
- Hold a valid Victorian Driver’s Licence (Provisional or Open) – note any suspended or cancelled drivers licenses will cease proficiency of award.
Course outcomes
Participants will be able to further assist on patrols by having the skills to drive the ATV
Basic Life Support [AID]
Basic Life Support [AID]
The purpose of this course is to help you gain knowledge and skills to deliver basic emergency care and deal with injuries at an incident scene.
Prerequisites
- Be a Financial Member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 11 years of age on the date of final assessment
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course participants will be allocated the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support
First Aid [AID]
First Aid
Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to manage an emergency first aid situation until professional medical support is available
Prerequisites
- Be a Financial Member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 14 years old of age on the date of final assessment
Course Outcomes
Participants will become a specialised first aid patrolling member. They can further develop their skills by completing additional emergency care awards
Successful candidates will receive the the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- HLTAID003 Provide First Aid
- HLTAID002 Provide Basic Life Support
- HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Gold Medallion (Advanced Lifesaving)
Gold Medallion award
Provides participants with advanced skills and knowledge to manage emergency situations in autonomous situations.
Prerequisites
- Be a Financial Member of Victorian Life Saving Club
- 17 years +
- Proficient in Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate
- Proficient in Senior First Aid
- Proficient in Bronze Medallion
- Proficient in Basic Beach Management
- Proficient in Spinal Management
Course Outcomes
Participants will become advanced patrolling members and have the competencies to potentially gain employment as a Lifeguard.
Inflatable Rescue Boat – Crew (IRBC)
Inflatable Rescue Boat – Crew
Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an IRB in rescue operations
Prerequisites
- Be a Financial Member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 15 years at the date of final assessment
- Hold a Proficient Bronze Medallion
Course Outcomes
Participants will be able to further assist on patrols by having the skills to crew an IRB. They can further develop these skills by completing their IRB Driver Certificate
Successful candidates will receive the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- PUASAR015A Crew small powercraft in a rescue operation
Silver Medallion IRB Driver
Silver Medallion Inflatable Rescue Boat – Driver
Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive an Inflatable Rescue Boat in rescue operations.
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Proficient in Bronze Medallion
- Proficient in IRB Crew Certificate
- Hold a current Victorian boat licence
- Be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
Course outcomes
Participants will be able to further assist on patrols by having the skills to drive an IRB.
Successful candidates will receive the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- PUASAR014A Operate and Maintain a small powercraft and motor for rescue operations
- PUAEQU001B Prepare Maintain and Test Response Equipment
Radio Operator Award
Radio Operators Certificate
Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to perform basic communication practices.
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 13 years of age on the date of final assessment
Course outcomes
Participants will have the competencies to effectively and confidently use radios as a means of communication whilst patrolling
Resuscitation Certificate (AID)
Resuscitation Award
Provides participants with the knowledge and skills to perform CPR during an emergency incident
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 10 years of age on the date of final assessment
Course outcomes
Participants will be able to perform CPR during an emergency situation. They will be able to further develop their skills by completing their Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate.
Successful candidates will receive the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Rescue Water Craft (RWC)
Rescue Water Craft – RWC
Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage a Rescue Water Craft in rescue operations.
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 18 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Bronze Medallion and Certificate II Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
- Current Victorian drivers license with the ability to operate a tow vehicle
- Current Victorian boat licence
Course outcomes
Participants will become a Rescue Water Craft Operator and be able to be a part of further lifesaving services.
Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue (SMAR)
Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue Award – SMAR
Provides participants with advanced skills and knowledge to effectively coordinate search and rescue operations.
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 16 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Hold a proficient Bronze Medallion – Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic rescue)
Course outcomes
Participants will become advanced patrolling members and have the competencies to coordinate aquatic rescues.
Successful candidates will receive the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- PUAOHS002B Maintain Safety at an Incident Scene
- PUASAR011C Search as a member of an Aquatic Search Team
Silver Medallion Beach Management
Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management
Provides participants with the skills, knowledge and experience to manage a beach in emergency and non-emergency situations.
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Proficient in Bronze Medallion award or
- Hold a Bronze Medallion and be proficient in one of the following :- Radio Operator Certificate
– Advance Resuscitation Techniques Certificate
– Apply (Senior) First Aid
– Spinal Management
Course outcomes
Successful candidates will receive the nationally recognised unit of competency:
- BSBFLM312C Contribute to team effectiveness
- PUAOPE027A Undertake beach safety management activities
- PUATEA002B Work Autonomously
Spinal Management
Spinal Management
Provides participants with the skills, knowledge and experience to manage injured casualties with suspected spinal injuries in an aquatic environment and in emergency situations.
Prerequisites
- Be a financial member of a Victorian Life Saving Club
- Be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
- Proficient in:- Senior First Aid or
– Bronze Medallion
Course outcomes
Participants will become spinal management specialised patrolling members. They can further develop their skills by completing additional first aid or emergency care awards.
