10/4/26 Lifesavers support Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah
10/4/26
Equipment and relief items donated by Victorian lifesaving clubs have been delivered to Sri Lanka, following the catastrophic impacts of Cyclone Ditwah last year.
The items include inflatable rescue boats, rescue boards, lifesaving rescue tubes, first-aid items, training equipment and clothing.Â
Life Saving Victoria and the stateâs lifesaving clubs have a long-standing relationship with Sri Lanka Life Saving, supporting the establishment of lifesaving operations, member training, and supplying lifesaving equipment to improve water safety across the country since 2011.
Clubs across Victoria have donated the equipment in a bid to replace items that have been lost or damaged.Â
Severe flooding, torrential rain and landslides have hit Sri Lanka since the cyclone made landfall on November 28.Â
More than 400 people have died, 300 are missing, 500 homes have been destroyed and 230,000 people have been displaced. Itâs estimated the nationwide emergency has impacted more than 1.4 million people.Â
Life Saving Victoria Manager â Member Engagement and Sport Simon Rickard commended volunteer club members for their contributions.Â
âOur hearts go out to the people of Sri Lanka, and now, we reach out with all our hands and all our might to support you in your hour of need,â Mr. Rickard said.Â
âI thank our clubs for their generosity in donating these items. Every contribution will help save lives and support the Sri Lankan people to rebuild after this tragedy.âÂ
