11/11/25 Point Lonsdale lifesavers win national award
11/11/25
Volunteer lifesavers from Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club have been recognised with a national award for their efforts in a mass rescue off Port Phillip Heads.
Club members received a Certificate of Merit at Surf Life Saving Australia’s Awards of Excellence for their part in the mass rescue, which is helping to save 17 swimmers and three kayakers, who were being swept out on a fast-moving tide in April this year.
The incident sparked a major rescue operation involving multiple rescue helicopters, two volunteer Marine Search and Rescue Vessels, Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and a Port Phillip Sea Pilots vessel that came to the aid of the distressed swimmers.
The Certificate of Merit recognises the skill and risk involved in performing the rescue, and that the “outcome for patients without (the) rescue attempt would have resulted in serious injury or possible fatality”.
The national award comes after Point Lonsdale SLSC received a Rescue Recognition Award for their efforts during the incident at Life Saving Victoria’s Awards of Excellence held earlier this year.
Fourteen volunteer lifesavers, lifesaving clubs and lifesaving sport teams from across Victoria were finalists for national honours at Saturday’s awards night, held at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth Hotel.

The annual Surf Life Saving Australia Awards of Excellence recognises Australia’s top volunteer lifesavers and paid lifeguards for their dedication, skill and selflessness in their service to the lifesaving movement and the community.
Life Saving Victoria General Manager – Member Engagement and Sport Simon Rickard congratulated all members who were recognised on the night.
“Our people give their time and energy freely and enthusiastically to keep our community safe in the water,” Mr. Rickard said.
“To be recognised among the very best lifesavers and lifeguards across the country in an incredible achievement, and testament to everyone who saves lives and empowers communities to safely enjoy water here in Victoria.”
