Students got a thrill when the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service (WLRHS) landed at Bonbeach Primary School to mark the first ever national Red & Yellow Day on Wednesday, March 4.

Helicopter crew members delivered vital water safety education to 350 students during the visit, which also showcased the lifesaving service's critical role in protecting Victorian communities.

The inaugural Red & Yellow Day is a nationwide celebration of Australia’s volunteer lifesavers, who give their time and energy freely to keep the community safe in the water.

The WLRHS, operated by Life Saving Victoria (LSV), plays a crucial role in the state by conducting search and rescue missions, aerial surveillance and beach patrols.

The interactive visit allowed students to learn from crew members about the importance of water safety, and explore the state-of-the-art lifesaving equipment onboard, including radio and navigation systems and the helicopter's two-person rescue winch.

“As a crew member of the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service, it’s an incredible feeling to bring this iconic service into the classroom and inspire the next generation,” said Wayne Cartwright, WLRHS Crew Member.

“When we land the helicopter at schools, it’s an opportunity for students to learn about lifesaving, see the equipment we use, and meet the people behind the rescues. It’s a unique way to connect with young Australians and show them the importance of helping others and staying safe in and around the water.”

Life Saving Victoria is proud to partner with Westpac to deliver school landings across Victoria, equipping young people with vital water safety education and inspiring the next generation of lifesavers.

For nearly 50 years, the WLRHS has patrolled Victoria's coastline, from Wilson’s Promontory to Apollo Bay, delivering invaluable services to communities. These school visits highlight the importance of education in fostering a culture of safety and emergency preparedness.
