After 62 years, Max has done it again!

Some achievements are worth celebrating more than once. For Waratah Beach Surf Life Saving Club Life Member Max Collins, earning his Bronze Medallion again over sixty years after the first time is certainly one of them.
Max originally completed his Bronze Medallion in 1963 at Anglesea SLSC, the very same year Waratah Beach SLSC was established. The Bronze Medallion is the foundation qualification in lifesaving, certifying members in surf awareness, rescue techniques, first aid, CPR and teamwork, and allowing them to patrol on Australian beaches.
After his Bronze Medallion expired in recent years, Max chose to complete the full qualification again. He did this not for recognition, but with a clear goal: to join the patrol team at St Kilda Life Saving Club.
In 2026, Max earned his Bronze Medallion again at Elwood Life Saving Club.

A Lifetime of Service
Max joined Waratah Beach SLSC in late 1967, drawn by the club’s people, potential, and strong sense of community. Over the years, he has taken on many roles and became one of Waratah’s first Life Members. His influence has helped shape the club’s culture, competition success and strong connection to lifesaving traditions.
Max’s impact on surf lifesaving goes far beyond Waratah. He is one of Australia’s longest-serving surf sports officials, with almost 50 years as an accredited Rescue and Resuscitation and March Past official at both state and national levels. His dedication to mentoring, coaching, and preserving surf lifesaving’s heritage continues to benefit clubs and members across the state.

Leading by Example
Earning his Bronze Medallion again is a powerful reminder of Max’s lifelong commitment to surf lifesaving. It shows his belief in staying up to date, staying involved, and leading by example, no matter how many years have passed since he first wore the cap.
Max attended his first patrol for St Kilda on 15th February this year.
From 1963 to 2026, Max’s journey has come full circle. Waratah Beach SLSC is incredibly proud of his achievement and thankful for his long-standing service.
Congratulations, Max. Your effort is truly inspiring, and you are a real club legend.
