Kensington Aquatic Centre Welcomes Over 4,800 Visitors on Family Day Reopening
On Sunday 28 September 2025, the Kensington Community Aquatic and Recreation Centre reopened its doors to a wave of excitement, welcoming over 4,800 visitors in a single day. This milestone marks more than just the unveiling of a modern facility, it represents a renewed commitment to community wellbeing, aquatic safety, and inclusive recreation.
The redevelopment was led by the City of Melbourne, with operations managed by YMCA Victoria, reflecting a strong partnership between local government and community-focused service providers. Their shared vision was to create a space that supports lifelong health, learning, and connection.
The new centre includes a 25-metre indoor pool with eight lanes, a learn-to-swim pool, a vibrant children’s water play area, three full-sized multipurpose sports courts, a modern gym with 24-hour access, and health and wellness spaces for group fitness. Accessibility was a key priority, with inclusive change rooms and a Changing Places facility funded by the Victorian Government.
Life Saving Victoria was proud to contribute to design and signage reviews, staff training, and the implementation of safety programs such as Watch Around Water and SwimSafe. This collaboration ensures that safety is embedded not just in infrastructure, but in culture, through training, signage, and ongoing support.
The open day was a celebration of community spirit. Families explored the new spaces, engaged with staff, and enjoyed appearances from beloved YMCA and LSV mascots, Filbert the Frog, Lochie the Lifeguard and Suzie the Swim Teacher. The event also featured visits from swimming legend Emma McKeon and local AFL stars, adding excitement and inspiration to the festivities.
As the aquatic industry continues to evolve, Kensington stands as a model for how infrastructure can reflect sector values—safety, inclusion, and community empowerment. Its reopening is a reminder that when design meets purpose, the ripple effects extend far beyond the pool.
