Supervision Isn’t Just About Safety, It’s About Respect

Alexie Barlow has worked in aquatics since 2016. Now a Leisure Aquatic Safety Coordinator at Belgravia Leisure, Alexie leads teams across multiple facilities, ensuring safe and welcoming spaces for all.

But in recent seasons, Alexie has seen a troubling rise in occupational violence. “Poor behaviour, particularly from males aged 12 to 30, has contributed significantly to incidents of injury and distress for both the public and our staff,” Alexie says.

One of the biggest triggers? Non-compliance with supervision rules.

“Watch Around Water is a great program. It reminds parents that they are responsible for supervising their children in aquatic spaces. But when those expectations aren’t met, it often leads to conflict. Staff are placed in difficult situations, and that’s where OVA begins.”

Alexie believes education is key. “We want families to enjoy the water safely. That means understanding the rules, children under 5 must be within arms reach, and children under 10 must be actively supervised. These aren’t suggestions. They’re conditions of entry.”

By respecting supervision guidelines, visitors help protect not only their children, but also the staff who work hard to keep everyone safe.
