Surf Boat Icon Recognised with Highest Honour

Scott Tannahill's lifesaving journey began in 1977 and 49 years later, he has become one of the most respected figures in Australian surf boat rowing.
Earning his place in the Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL) Hall of Fame, Scott has been recognised for his lasting impact as a surf boat competitor, sweep, coach, official, administrator and mentor at many Victorian lifesaving clubs including Woolamai Beach, Jan Juc, Torquay and Anglesea Surf Life Saving Clubs.

Excellence on the Water
In surf boat rowing, the sweep stands at the stern, steering the boat, managing balance, and controlling strategic rowing maneuvers to safely navigate waves. As a sweep and competitor, Scott has achieved success at the highest levels of the sport. He has represented Victoria on 28 occasions, claimed 36 Victorian Surf Rowing State Championship titles and won nine Australian Lifesaving Championship medals, including two gold medals. His international achievements include World Lifesaving Championship gold in 2004 and bronze in 2006, while he was also selected in the Australian Surfboat Team in 2016.
Beyond competition, Scott has played a leading role in shaping surf boat rowing across Australia. He has served as Vice President of the ASRL, contributed to national boat panels, officiated as a national starting official and helped coordinate Victorian and National Sweep Schools.

Building the Future of Surf Rowing
His influence on education and safety has been particularly significant. Scott co-authored vital Sweep Accreditation programs and contributed to the development of nationally recognised sweep training resources and safety initiatives that continue to support surf boat rowers around the country.
Scott’s dedication to lifesaving extends far beyond the boat arena. A Life Member of both LSV and the Victorian Surf Rowers League, he has served in numerous club and state leadership positions. He has also supported coastal safety operations for decades through IRB service, major event water safety and emergency callouts.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
Throughout his career, Scott has received numerous awards and recognitions, including bravery honours from Surf Life Saving Australia and the International Life Saving Federation.
His induction into the ASRL Hall of Fame is fitting recognition of a career defined by excellence, leadership, education and service.
Scott’s legacy can be measured not only in medals and titles, but in the generations of surf rowers, sweeps, officials and volunteers who have benefited from his knowledge, mentorship and commitment to the surf lifesaving movement.
