Waves Leisure Centre Crowned Champion at 2026 Pool Lifeguard Challenge
Waves Leisure Centre has taken out top honours at the 2026 Life Saving Victoria Pool Lifeguard Challenge, demonstrating exceptional skill, teamwork and professionalism in a demanding day of competition.
Held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, the annual challenge brought together 24 teams from aquatic facilities across Victoria to test the skills lifeguards rely on every day to keep communities safe in and around the water.
A Test of Real-World Skills
Representing Kingston City Council, the Waves team claimed victory with 282 points after an impressive rise from third place in 2025. AquaPulse (WynActive) finished a close second on 270 points, while YAWA Aquatic Centre (Belgravia Leisure) secured third place with 267 points.
Over more than seven hours, teams tackled a series of challenging scenarios, including simulated emergency incidents, medical treatments, and people-management situations designed to reflect the realities of working as a pool lifeguard.
Building Skills Through Competition
While competition was fierce, the event was about much more than winning. The Pool Lifeguard Challenge provides an opportunity for participants to sharpen their rescue and response skills, learn from peers and strengthen team performance in a supportive environment.
Life Saving Victoria Manager – Partnerships and Engagement, Andrew Wilson, said the challenge brought together lifeguards from across the state for a rewarding day of learning and collaboration.
"We had fierce competition, and a lot of fun, with pool lifeguards coming together from across Victoria," Mr Wilson said.
"It's important lifeguards keep their skills sharp so they can keep our community safe in the water. Life Saving Victoria's Pool Lifeguard Challenge is a great opportunity for them to do this through some friendly competition."
Celebrating Victoria's Lifeguards
Events like the Pool Lifeguard Challenge highlight the dedication, knowledge and professionalism of Victoria's aquatic industry workforce. Every day, lifeguards play a vital role in preventing incidents and responding when emergencies occur, helping make aquatic environments safer for everyone.
