Westpac Chopper Delivers Water Safety Lesson to Regional Schools

"As a Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service crew member, it's an incredible feeling to bring this iconic service into the classroom and inspire the next generation"

The Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter received a massive welcome in Bendigo, Mooroopna and Shepparton as they landed at local schools for a special visit.

The Westpac Rescue Crew members travelled to regional Victoria to deliver water safety lessons to more than 400 students, showcasing the lifesaving service's critical role in protecting Victorian communities.

Bendigo Southeast College and Lightning Reef Primary School in Bendigo, St Georges Road Primary School Shepparton and students from St Mary’s School Mooroopna were thrilled to learn about search and rescue missions, aerial surveillance, and beach patrols, including the importance of water safety, and explore the state-of-the-art lifesaving equipment onboard, including radio and navigation systems and the helicopter's two-person rescue winch.

High school students at Bendigo Southeast College also gained insight into jobs in the emergency services sector and potential career pathways into professions such as law enforcement, aviation, and paramedicine.

Inspiring the next generation

"As a Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service crew member, it's an incredible feeling to bring this iconic service into the classroom and inspire the next generation," said Kane Treloar, Rescue Crew Member.

"When we land the helicopter at schools, it's more than just a thrilling experience—it's a chance for students to learn about lifesaving, see the equipment we use, and meet the people behind the rescues. It's a unique way to connect with young Australians and show them the importance of helping others and staying safe in and around the water."

For nearly 50 years, the WLRHS has patrolled Victoria's coastline, from Wilson's Prom to Apollo Bay, delivering invaluable community services. These school visits highlight the importance of education in fostering a culture of safety and preparedness in the next generation.
